Recently I accepted a project from a long-time client who was going to provide a design that needed to be developed into a WordPress theme. She sent me an email with a layout saying “Attached is a mock up for what I’d like the new website to resemble. I realize it’s probably just a template you use and fill in.”

Actually – no, I don’t use templates.

Every theme is built from scratch. They’re not crammed full of dozens or hundreds of features that a client would likely never use, nor do they come with built-in functionality that would better be handled by a plugin (for example, a built-in gallery that disappears when you change themes). They are cleanly-coded and well-commented so that other developers, if they become involved with the site, won’t have a hard time working with them in the future.
