Q. How long does it take to build a website?
A. It varies greatly, depending on how complex the project is. A site of less than 10 pages with little extra functionality may take weeks, but an ecommerce site of 1,000 products will take several months. Each project is unique!

Q. What's the difference between web design and web development?
A. It varies depending on who you ask, but design includes the layout work and all of the work done on the site's appearance and graphic elements, usually in a program like Photoshop.

Development includes migrating the Photoshop layout into an HTML/CSS web page, coding all the site's pages, and all scripting (like for ecommerce, content management or any other functionality you want).

Design and development go hand in hand and most web designers are also developers, and vice versa.

Q. What should we put on our page until the site is 100% complete? All say no to under construction pages. What you suggest we do?
A. I'd suggest making a nice placeholder page - don't use a big graphic of a construction worker with an 'under construction' sign. Everyone does this, so be different!

Try making a simple but clean layout with your logo, in company colors, announcing the pending launch of your new website. I think this looks more professional than what you usually see.

Q. What does 'bandwidth exceeded' mean?
A. That means that your site has received an amount of traffic that has caused it to go over the monthly quota for bandwidth. Basically, there have been more requests for pages than anticipated. The solution is to rais the monthly quota, often by upgrading your hosting account if the warning happens consistently for more than two months.

Q. What is a landing page and do you build them?
A. A landing page is a page that contains content that's very related to the keyword that links to it. Often it refers to target pages for keywords on Adwords or other pay-per-click programs.

For example, if you have the keyword 'retro toasters' for your site that sells kitchen gear, it's better to make a specific page all about retro toasters and point the keyword to that page rather than just pointing to the home page of your site. If someone clicks your ad, you want them to find relevant info right away without having to search for it.

We can build landing pages, contact us through the Contact page and let us know the details of your job.

Q. I've heard a lot about SEO lately - what is it and why is it so important?
A. If you type in a search on Google, the main body of results you see (the ones under any sponsored or paid links at the very top) are the organic links. SEO is concerned with improving your site's appearance within those organic links - studies show that most people stop looking past the third page of results, and if your site doesn't show up in those top two or three pages for your most important keywords, it can be a problem. It won't matter how wonderful your site is if no one can find it!

SEO has a number of elements including:

1) keyword research
2) page titles
3) page descriptions
4) incorporating keywords in content
5) incorporating keywords in tags
6) adding fresh content often
7) getting links into your website

It can be complicated, but in the long run it's usually less expensive than PPC (pay-per-click) advertising, depending on the competition within your industry.

Q. What is CSS?
A. A question near and dear to us!

CSS stands for Cascading Style Sheets. It's a way of building a website in such a manner that it's easy to maintain, update and change and has more compact code than the old table-based method. In short, if your site is built using CSS, you can completely change the look and feel of all the pages on the site by changing the stylesheet, not having to deal with dozens or hundreds of pages individually. This saves you money and time!

Q. Should I get my designer to buy domain names for me?
A. Nope. A good designer will tell you how to register your own domain name - it's really very easy. There are many horror stories about companies who had someone register domains for them, then had to fight a legal battle to get them back because they were registered under someone else's name.

Q. How much does a website cost?
A. That really depends - how many pages do you need? Do you want to be able to edit it yourself without having to know any code? Will you need a shopping cart, a blog, a forum or someplace to keep your photo collection? Give us a call or send an email and we'll be happy to discuss.

Q. Who owns the rights to my website once it's launched?
A. It really depends on the designer you're working with and the contract you signed (you did get a contract, didn't you?). If you work with Red Kite, you own the rights to the finished site. And you are always able to pick up and move on with little difficulty and no legal issues.
